Teak alternative
Bristol-based merchant Robbins Timber has recently added TMT Marine to its list of products. TMT is a sustainable alternative to Burmese teak aimed at the marine market. TMT starts out life as American maple, selected and cut at source to achieve a straight, quarter-sawn grain. It is then kiln-dried before undergoing a thermal modification process.
“The result,” say Robbins, “is a rich brown, quarter-sawn timber with a Class 1 durability rating.” It is apparently suitable for decks, margin boards and, like teak, most other applications on board a boat. It also “oers a very viable alternative to traditional teak sourced from Myanmar, which can no longer be imported into the UK.” Robbins Timber is the sole distributor of this product in the UK and Ireland, and will supply TMT in any quantity, rough sawn or machined to decking or other profiles, in a wide range of lengths and widths.
