Iam disgusted at D Hipperson’s comments in CCW, 3 May, following the report regarding a petition that proposes the re-testing of motorists, and targeting the elderly in particular.

As for the proposal to re-test all motorists, as Mr Hipperson claims to support, this is unworkable nanny state nonsense – many drivers, the elderly in particular, would either fail or be deterred from sitting a re-test, even though they might well be generally proficient drivers.

This in turn could impact on the general public’s mobility and unemployment would be high as many jobs require a driving licence. Also, many people who inhabit remote regions would be left pretty much stranded as public transport in such regions is poor, and the elderly would struggle with their independence.

As for the safety issues affecting elderly motorists, insurance company data has proved that under 25-year-olds are the most dangerous drivers, not the elderly. With age comes experience, caution, tolerance and a mild manner of driving which compensates for any loss of ability that age may inflict.

If we are to protect the classic vehicle movement, then we must unite and fight for the right to drive our vehicles. If we don’t, then the age-prejudiced will deal a hammer blow to our movement.

Many classic vehicle owners are more aged – if our numbers fall, this could lead to many vehicles becoming surplus to requirement, reducing their values. Related business and employment would therefore be reduced. Let’s stand together on this. Simon Canham, Shap, Cumbria
