LOSE YOURSELF IN 1992

-

BARCELONA OLYMPICS

The 1992 Summer Games saw more than 9300 athletes across 169 countries taking part in Spain, with Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia all competing as independent countries for the first time since 1936. It wasn’t especially successful for the Brits – we came 13th in the medals table, although Linford Christie (in the men’s 100m) and Sally Gunnell (women’s 400m hurdles) won golds.

OUR NIGE, THE RECORD BREAKER

This was a good year for British Formula 1 driver Nigel Mansell, who was crowned World Champion at the Hungarian Grand Prix with five races still to go. He won the first five rounds of the season and a total of nine wins across the 16-race season – both records would stand for at least a decade, until they were toppled by Michael Schumacher in 2002 and 2004 respectively. Mansell’s achievements were recognised at the end of the year when he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year for the second time.

GALILEO! MAGNIFICO! It’s been 25 years since Wayne’s

World hit the big screen and one of its most memorable scenes is the sequence with Wayne (Mike Myers), Garth (Dana Carvey) and their friends squeezed into an AMC Pacer, head-banging along to Queen’s

Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen’s lead singer, Freddie Mercury, passed away a few months before the film’s premiere; and shortly afterwards the band’s 1975 hit returned to the charts. As for the Pacer, it sold at auction last year for $37,400.
