Escorts prepped for Boris Becker and co. could be yours
‘It’s about time I reduced this unique collection’ KEITH WILLIAMS
Four Ford Escort XR3i Cabriolets built for the stars of the 1989 Wimbledon tennis tournament are coming up for sale.
They were among 500 white Tennis limited editions, with electric roofs, special seats and decals.
Owner and Derbyshire collector Keith Williams says: ‘I seem to have a habit of collecting several of one thing and it really is time I reduced my collection, as I am relocating.’
According to Keith’s research, the first car, registered G1 BFB, was, prepared for former champion Boris Becker, whose middle name is Franz. It has 74,000 miles on the clock and Keith is looking for offers around £12,500. Keith adds: ‘I actually bought this car from my uncle. Someone locally saw it and it turned out that he had another Tennis car.’
G909 NTV was said to have been prepared by Nottinghambased Stapleford Motors, the local registration letters being especially appropriate for its intended recipient, Martina Navratilova. Its MoT runs until April and it has 108,000 miles on the odometer.
F544 RBM, which was assigned to Jeremy Bates, has no MoT but has 80,000 recorded miles. Offers of £3000 are invited for this and the final car, G360 KGP, which was put together by Dees of Croydon for Swedish star Stefan Edberg.
All four cars would be yours for a total of £20,000.
Keith says: ‘It certainly is a unique collection. I have spoken to various agents and historians but there is no information around on these cars or how they were used.’
