Ford Mondeo

- JAMES SADLIER MANAGING EDITOR

1994 FORD MONDEO 1.8 GLX Nervous times awaited me at Express Autocare’s garage in Peterborough as the Mondeo awaited its first MoT under my ownership. I had suspicions that there might be hidden horrors coming my way and that this next year of Ford ownership could become expensive.

I’ve recently noticed some vibration under braking, leading me to worry that the discs and pads might be on their way out. Up on the ramp it seemed they were all fine, but one of the axle arm fixtures was ever so slightly worn – could it be the culprit? I need to replace it, but it’s not an MoT failure.

As I shadowed the mechanic during the inspection, he pointed out that the driver side suspension will need replacing soon – again not an MoT failure, but something to look at sooner rather than later.

It looks like I may also have to source a new radiator, as we discovered a coolant leak. As much as pink is a lovely colour, I don’t really like seeing it running down my nice grey radiator!

The Mondeo’s illumination has come back to haunt me though, as the mechanic noticed that the headlights were only just bright enough; they need a serious heavy-duty clean or, worst-case scenario, to be replaced completely.

After all these issues, the only things that actually needed fixing were (drum roll, please), the front indicator bulbs. The reason why they weren’t quite orange enough became apparent when we found that they were practically clear. Now my indicators put the Blackpool Illuminations to shame!

But thankfully I now have a year of joyous Mondeo driving – until the next drama, that is! THANKS TO Express Auto Care, Peterborough. ■ 01733 352352
