A RETURN TO FORM
Some of Britain’s most devoted classic owners helped make this one-day gathering a hit
Abewildering variety of more than 1200 classics basked in the summer sunshine at Classics On The Green – a return to form after downpours drastically reduced the turnout at 2017’s event to 200 cars.
A free-to-attend event organised by the Watford & District Classic Vehicle Club, the show raises money for local and national charities. It seemed to have one recurring theme – cars that had been with their devoted owners for many years.
Participants included Ken Pine, who purchased his 1960 Ford 107E Prefect for £20 in 1972, after it had failed the MoT on a wheel bearing. ‘I kept the car and it was off the road for many years before I decided to restore it!’ he said.
It’s a similar story to Andy Hayle, who bought his 1971 Volvo 164 in 1978. He said: ‘I was an apprentice in a bodyshop. The car had accident damage and I repaired it the best I could,’ he recalled. ‘ Years later, after I’d stopped using the car, I decided to restore it properly.’
Other standouts included Mick Puttick, who bought his 1970 Vauxhall Ventora 37 years ago. He said: ‘I used it as an everyday car for years. I always loved the look of them and ended up hanging on to this one. Eventually the welding was done!’
The gathering – which encourages classic owners to come and go throughout the event – brought together possibly the most varied selection of cars you’d find anywhere, picturesque surroundings, and owners with plenty of tales to tell. What more could you want!
