Silverstone switches location for auction dedicated to Stuttgart’s sports cars
Harry Whale, Silverstone
Silverstone Auctions has changed its venue for its Porsche Sale: how important is a new location?
With its fantastic accessibility and state-of-the-art facilities, Dallas Burston Polo Club (DBPC) is the ideal choice for the 2018 Porsche Sale. Its location in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside makes it fantastically picturesque and heavy investment in the site means that the DBPC is very appropriate for our Porsche Sale, given how easy it will be to attend for our clients. Location for any sale is always important but for any auction to be successful depends mostly on the cars you offer, so our focus remains on offering quality, rare and interesting classics.
Do one-make sales attract solely enthusiasts or do you see investors as well?
For our Porsche Sale we have limited the number of cars to ensure we only accept the very best Porsches out there today. There has always been a strong desire for high-quality classics by all types of buyer. If the car is right, it will attract buyers of all types.
Are there openings for other onemake sales, or are there only one or two makes worthy of them?
Before you commit to doing any sale you have to think about where the cars are going to come from and who is going to buy them.
We are always open to opportunities and if we feel we can bring together a selection of high-quality, desirable classics from a single marque, then we can ensure the quality of the sale and therefore its success.
What are your feelings about the market for the rest of the year? Will it be positive?
As long as we continue to offer interesting, quality cars with competitive and sensible estimates then I remain very positive for the rest of 2018 and beyond. One of the great strengths of the Silverstone Classic Sale was there was a real eclectic mix of cars that you simply couldn’t buy anywhere else in the UK at the time. The ‘homologation specials’, for example, performed very well as those cars were made in limited numbers, all had good provenance with sensible estimates. In addition, at the time of the sale there weren’t any other similar cars on the market, which created the interest and, therefore, the good results on the day.
‘Homologation specials have performed very well’
