THE BIG FREEZE

Temperatur­es reached their lowest point for three decades on 24 February and 60 counties were affected by the weather conditions. Caithness went without power or light for a week and the AA reported that 70 roads were blocked due to snow, which had resulted in hundreds of cars being abandoned.

THE RAILWAY STRIKE

A strike declared by the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen on 24 May resulted in the government declaring a State of Emergency on 31 May, affording them extra powers to maintain vital supplies. Meanwhile commuters battled with chaos, misery and extra hours on the working day.

FIRST EDITION OF

DIXON OF DOCK GREEN PC George Dixon was shot in tThhee 1B9l5u0e fiLlamm p , but the character was revived for BBC TV fi ve years later on 9 July. Jack Warner would play Dixon until 1976, which was a testament to his skill and popularity as an actor. Sadly, only 32 out of the 432 episodes survive in the archives.

THE LADYKILLER­S GOES ON RELEASE

The last great comedy to hail from Ealing Studios, this was also the first starring role for Peter Sellers (he also voiced the parrots). One of the many reasons for re-watching it is the opportunit­y to marvel at the location footage shot near St. Pancras Station.
