WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

Half-choke produces an instant response from cold and there’s an unmistakably deep tone to the exhaust. Clutch operation is smooth, though Minors don’t appreciate being rushed through the gears. The brakes and are efficient, though the steering is a little vague. The original suspension is more than competent if treated sympathetically. The Morris comes into its own on country lanes at 40-50mph, especially with the hood down.

BODYWORK CHECK

Any converted saloon (like this one is) requires close inspection to ensure that the correct strengthening plates have been installed. We found all present and correct, so the door gaps line up precisely. The Trafalgar Blue paint is in super condition for an older restoration. There are a couple of stone-chips in the bonnet edge and a rubbing mark from the driver’s door catching the front wing when fully opened, though adjusting the check strap should cure this. The trim around the offside rear wing needs re-securing, but while the chrome is aged, it’s not pitted. The white hood is in good order and matches the wheels and front grille.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The seat backs could do with re-filling (though the covers are in good condition), but removing the seats would also allow a future owner to reposition the carpets. Repainting the gear stick rubber securing plate would improve the flooring, too. There are no rips or other signs of wear to the carpets or seats, but there’s a split in the driver’s sun visor. Both door cards are misshapen at the base but their vinyl coverings are unblemished – it looks like it’s just the boards that have warped.

UNDER THE BONNET

Clean and bright with plenty of BMC green on the engine, which has no leaks, even from the cork rocker cover gasket. The battery tray and surrounding area could be improved with a couple of hours’ effort, something that would transform the bay. The large history file includes details of the 2014 engine rebuild, which included work to make it unleaded-compatible, plus images from the restoration and soft-top conversion that was carried out 20 years ago. MoTs date back to 1998, while parts invoices from 1994 offer a full background, with later additions from the last owner who bought it in 2001. Mechanically this Minor has been well cared for, receiving regular servicing and new parts as needed.

THE CCW VIEW

Post-production convertible conversions have become more accepted over recent years, especially if they are carried out to a high standard. This example is correct and priced well. The engine offers good performance while the bodywork and interior need only minor tinkering. Overall this convertible is ready to show and enjoy.
