BUYING WITH CONFIDENCE

-

CONCOURS £10,000-14,000+

1 CHOOSE CAREFULLY

Early, UK-supplied cars in original condition with plenty of history top the value tree. Factory extras such as optional overdrive help.

2 WHAT’S THE HISTORY?

Obviously expect to pay more for the Spitfi re’s GT6 cousin. FIA racers can exceed £20k, rare works rally Spifi res, much more!

3 IS IT AN EX-US CAR?

Many Spitfi res have come back from the US and have since had plenty of time to deteriorate in the UK. Be sure to inspect these cars particularly closely.

GOOD £5000-10,000

1 LOOK UNDERNEATH

As the saying goes, there are some things you can’t polish. Don’t be fooled by a fancy exterior, and scrutinise the quality of resto work.

2 BE CHOOSY

Remember that you’re not short of options, especially in this price range. Always test a few different examples before committing.

3 IS IT STANDARD?

Well-loved cars are more likely to carry a few modifications. Handling kits and discreet engine upgrades are good news, but only if they’ve been done to a high standard.

USABLE £2000-£5000

1 LOOK FOR CORROSION

You’d have to be mad to not take this seriously, because the potential for rust is huge. Sills, floorpan, wings and wheelarches usually fare worst.

2 CHECK THE CABIN

Rough interiors can be sorted at relatively low cost and shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. To a lesser extent the same is true of mechanical woes.

3 WATCH FOR BODGING

Low values historically mean that there’s an increased risk of bodged repairs and slipped servicing. Beware of cheap parts, and ask questions of any car that rings alarm bells.

PROJECT £750-2000

1 IS IT WORTH IT?

Projects can be picked up remarkably cheaply, but some are better as donor vehicles, given the welding that’s usually needed.

2 JOIN THE CLUB

Parts availability is mostly great, and secondhand components can be found. Club networks are strong and omnipresent.

3 COST UP THE REPAIRS

Buy the least rusty car you can afford and budget accordingly for repairs. Panels are available, but some are pricey. The large bonnet is over £1400 new!
