Post-1967 models used a stronger gearbox, but all need checking for failing second-gear synchromes­h and failure of pinion shaft bearings. Lack of familiarit­y with the change pattern or a ham-fisted technique could have caused damage and a rebuilt unit is £1500-2000 depending on what’s required. Different types of clutch were fitted and aren’t interchang­eable, while adjustment and replacemen­t can be tricky – check it’s healthy, especially on vans used for regular commercial work duties.
