TRY THE TRANSMISSION
Post-1967 models used a stronger gearbox, but all need checking for failing second-gear synchromesh and failure of pinion shaft bearings. Lack of familiarity with the change pattern or a ham-fisted technique could have caused damage and a rebuilt unit is £1500-2000 depending on what’s required. Different types of clutch were fitted and aren’t interchangeable, while adjustment and replacement can be tricky – check it’s healthy, especially on vans used for regular commercial work duties.
