HISTORICS’ THREEPOINTED STARS

Stuttgart metal shines at a very appropriate venue, but it was a Vauxhall that really stood out from the crowd

-

Historics ended the year at Mercedes-Benz World with a slightly smaller than usual offering, but one that should have pleased most punters. In view of the venue, Mercedes-Benz models were out in force and most found new homes, with an utterly delightful 1959 190SL making £91,692. And a one-owner, long-wheelbase G-wagen, £20,440.

Away from Mercedes-Benz cars, there was much to like: the less obvious sale star was a 1949 Vauxhall Wyvern L that had been meticulously restored, with work including four new wings being made from aluminium. Stunning in every way, it was away at £21,000.

Meanwhile a 1961 Austin Mini in good, but not concours condition, sold for £8512. A scruffy but thoroughly-deserving Alvis TE21 was bought for £11,320 and while a decent re-paint and interior tidy would have improved things no end, it was crying out to be used after nearly two decades in storage.

Those craving a proper fast Ford, but are hesitating due to exuberant prices, would have taken comfort from a restored, modified RS2000 MkI that was off for £22,960.

All-in-all, a good effort and one Historics should be happy with.
