The cool­ing sys­tem re­quires thor­ough scru­tiny, look­ing for ev­i­dence of wa­ter pump re­place­ment – early plas­tic im­pel­lors could break up – and a ra­di­a­tor that’s dam­aged or cor­roded. Throt­tle body fail­ure and faulty en­gine man­age­ment sen­sors/ ECU cause poor run­ning and dash­board warn­ing lights, and pin­point­ing the cause can rack up hefty di­ag­nos­tic bills. If you en­counter an en­gine that’s less than silky smooth then it’s bet­ter to find an­other car.
