The cooling system requires thorough scrutiny, looking for evidence of water pump replacement – early plastic impellors could break up – and a radiator that’s damaged or corroded. Throttle body failure and faulty engine management sensors/ ECU cause poor running and dashboard warning lights, and pinpointing the cause can rack up hefty diagnostic bills. If you encounter an engine that’s less than silky smooth then it’s better to find another car.
