SUMMER DREAMING

Drive-it Day has already inspired many of CCW’s staffers to drag their classics out of winter hibernation and ponder big plans for the summer. Here’s what they’re up to…

1977 MG MIDGET 1500

Realising that the Midget’s MoT doesn’t expire until the end of May prompted a pleasantly unexpected cobweb-clearing for my elder MG just before Easter.

A flurry of work last year cured most of its long-standing irritants (floppy driver’s door mirror, stiff window winders, jammed driver’s seatbelt, rattling bonnet) together with a couple of new ones (including, rather annoyingly, a dying alternator), so it really was a case of checking the oil, kicking the tyres, dropping the hood and hitting the road.

I had no particular plans for Drive-it Day, other than getting out there for a few hours, but that’s the beauty of this great event – you can mark it with a huge group of other like-minded classic fans, or just plough your own furrow.

1972 VW TYPE 2 CAMPER

The VW camper hasn’t spent the entire winter hibernating in the garage – some early spring-like weather meant that I’ve been able to dust the cobwebs off with a few trips to the North Norfolk coast. Hopefully it will heading in that direction again soon.

I check oil levels and tyre pressures before every journey and keep the battery charged as required. Fresh fuel also helps performance if it’s been standing for any length of time.

A friend, who is a keen surfer and paddle board explorer, recently wanted one of his boards collecting from storage and delivering to his home ready for the coming season. He would normally transport his boards in his 1971 VW camper, but as that is presently in works, I was happy to oblige. Any excuse for a run out!
