RICHARD BARNETT’S WEEK OF LOOKING AT THE MARKET

- by Richard Barnett

SATURDAY

Silverstone Auctions has played a blinder with its new venue – Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire. The early 18th century house is approached by a driveway that must be a mile and a half long, and it adds a sense of occasion to the sale – it’s certainly the best approach to a sale I’ve driven in years. I really like the 1965 Mercedes-Benz 600 which, even in short-wheelbase form, is big. No, make that really big. It would cost a fortune to run, but what a great car to use every day – providing you could afford the bills. Taking me back in time 30 years is the 1989 Railton Claremont, which was based on an XJ-S. I couldn’t stand it when it was new, but now I think it’s fantastic.

MONDAY

Off to pick up my latest buy, which you’ll soon be reading about in these pages. I won’t give the game away but for those wanting some idea what it might be, let’s just say it’s lacking in the door department and the engine might be in the wrong place.
