When dad worked for Jowett

-

Ireally enjoyed your Myth Busters about Jowett ( CCW, 24 April). My father worked for Jowett in the early 1950s at its factory in the Clayton suburb of Bradford that made the gearboxes.

My old next door neighbour was related to the Jowett family and her maiden name was Jowett. Sadly, she passed away a few years ago.

There is now a large Morrisons supermarket where the main Jowett factory was in Idle and when it was built it had a large mural on the wall which had Jowett cars on it – a nice thoughtful touch to remember the past. Likewise, Morrisons owns a Jowett van which is sometimes displayed at local classic car shows and other events in and around Bradford.

Incidentally, I used to work for Hepworth & Grandage, which made the Hepolite pistons. While there we did a project to see if we could match present day car manufacturers with ones that were long gone. The only one that we could match with Jowett was BMW and that got us all thinking what the Jowetts of today would look like.
