LOSE YOURSELF IN 1970

-

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS

The official programme for the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, 18 July 1970, clearly illustrates the changes going on in motoring and motorsport at that time, especially when it comes to sponsorship.

The programme, itself sponsored by the Daily Mail newspaper, included big adverts for Burmah (‘Britain’s big new name in petrol’), Brooke Bond Oxo, Yardley After Shave (‘You’ll see Yardley everywhere at Brands Hatch’) and Gold Leaf Team Lotus. In addition to all the usual oil, fuel and tyre company adverts.

Cosworth took just a quarter of a page to advertise its engines, but these were increasingly becoming a force to be reckoned with in F1.

THE WONDER OF SUMMERTIME

In the summer of 1970 people were singing along to Mungo Jerry’s catchy jug-band inspired

In The Summertime, that spent seven weeks at the top of the UK singles chart from 13 June, when it knocked Christie’s

Yellow River one-week wonder off the number one spot.

It took The King to depose Mungo Jerry as Elvis Presley went to the top of the charts with The Wonder Of You. It was one of Presley’s most successful singles ever in the UK, selling 891,000 copies. The single was a live version of a Presley stage show favourite, recorded in Las Vegas in February that year.

After six weeks at the top with Elvis, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles had a week at number one with The Tears Of

A Clown, before Freda Payne came along with Band Of Gold.
