Last Jowett 10 is to be revived – and you can help the restorers’ work

Officers from Bradford Council’s Museums and Galleries Service have joined forces with the Jowett Car Club to restore a near-extinct 1938 Jowett 10 – and they need your help.

The project is looking for donations to help with the restoration; money is needed to help renovate larger elements including door panels and wheel arches, as well as smaller items.

Donated to the Industrial Museum in poor condition, the one-owner 10 is thought to be the only survivor of 1881 made between 1936 and 1940.

The car was on show as part of a ‘Barn Find’ display at the Practical Classics Classic Car Restoration Show at Birmingham NEC, earlier this year. The plan is for the car to return to the show over the next two years to highlight the progress of the project and go on display at the Bradford Industrial Museum, in West Yorkshire.

When complete, it will be put on permanent display in the museum’s transport gallery, joining a small collection of Jowetts kept in observance of Bradford’s automotive heritage. Founded in 1906, the factory closed in 1955 after mounting losses from production of its Javelin saloon.

Club committee member, Chris Spencer – who also runs Hampshire Jowett specialist, Flat Cap Classics – said: ‘ We have an excellent relationship with the Bradford Industrial Museum, which owns the car.

‘Now the museum has agreed to put the 10 on display in its transport gallery and work on the restoration – which is seen as a joint venture between the museum and the club.

‘This will be an extremely sympathetic restoration. For example, we are not going to reinstate the sliding roof, which was plated over.

A budget of £5000 – of which £2000 has already been raised – has been set for the restoration to be carried out by members of the Jowett Car Club.

A project donation box can be found near the car in the transport gallery and people can keep up to date with the project and donate online by visiting the museum’s website.
