WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

This car needs a tiny bit of choke to start from cold but quickly comes up to temperature. You soon realise that this is a very solid car when underway because there are no knocks, bangs, rattles or vibrations. In fact it feels like a car at least half its age. The motor is sweet and revs freely and smoothly, delivering strong performance in every gear. Gear shifts are positive – we wouldn’t be surprised to discover that a short shift kit has been installed because the throw is tight, precise and satisfying. The car drives and handles impeccably, holding the road well with minimal roll in the corners. The brakes are similarly impressive, stopping the car straight and true with no juddering.

BODYWORK CHECK

This MG was originally exported to California where it must have enjoyed a largely moisture-free (and therefore corrosion-free) life. It returned to the UK in 1996, whereupon it underwent comprehensive restoration – including a new Heritage bodyshell – which is fully documented and backed up by a certifi cate of authenticity. The Tartan Red paintwork is immaculate and the car is spotless underneath, with no corrosion to be found. The spoked wire wheels are new and all of the chrome trim pieces have either been rechromed or replaced. The car also received new lights and headlamp bowls.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The carpets and upholstery are new throughout; thus, the interior’s quality and finish matches that of the exterior. The red-piped black leather seats are exquisite and match the door cards and carpets, none of which show any signs of wear. The carpets are dry and the floorpans solid. The hood fits tightly and is in pristine condition with no rips or creases. All of the gauges and instrumentation work as intended – including the aftermarket voltmeter – and all switchgear is present and functions correctly. The overhauled overdrive works perfectly.

UNDER THE BONNET

The engine bay is as clean as they come and the motor has new pistons, a reground crank and a new water pump, radiator, oil cooler, alternator, starter motor, wiring harness, petrol tank and fuel pump. The carburettors and distributor have been overhauled and the suspension and brakes reconditioned. The engine looks to be in perfect health with no leaks or smoke.

THE CCW VIEW

This is one of the best MGB Roadsters we have had the pleasure to drive – we cannot fault it. With a top quality restoration under its belt, this car is ready to be driven and enjoyed. With fewer than 5000 documented miles since restoration, it is practically a new car.
