FIRST CONCOURS ACED

Lotus Carlton, Aston DB4 and Ford Sierra XR4i commended at iconic cafe

- Sam Dawson

ALotus Carlton originally owned by one of the co-founders of the Premier League has won the Ace Café’s inaugural Concours event.

Long-term club member and Ford tuning guru Dave Brodie (of Brodie Brittain Racing) judged the 24 July contest, hosted by the Harrow Car Club, with support from auction house H&H. Any 1944-1994 car was welcome to join in.

Dave White’s Lotus Carlton, bought originally by Rick Parry just before the inaugural Premier League season in 1992, won the Best in Show trophy. He bought the car in 2017 and subjected it to a comprehensive restoration.

‘It’s now for sale again though. I really do have too many projects!’

The Carlton pipped a similarly asnew restored Aston Martin DB4 to the top prize, while third place went to an astonishingly original oneowner Ford Sierra XR4i.

Richard Pearson, owner, said: ‘It’s only done 24,000 miles from new. Not long after I bought it I started working from home, so kept it in the garage and just looked after it.’

Organiser and chairman of the Harrow Car Club, Gary Fryer, decided to organise the concours to draw more members in.

‘It helps fill the calendar up beyond our normal monthly meets. We’ve gone from 38 to 300 members in a year – and many of our new members came to the concours.

‘Harrow Car Club will be running another concours gathering next year ‘as soon as the Ace confirms the dates; we don’t want to clash with Classics on the Common at Harpenden!’

?? ?? Unlike its competitors, Richard Pearson’s XR4i was original and unrestored. Immaculate DB4 picked up second-place honours.
