Radwood UK
A show that encourages period dress. No, not that one…
Cult US show, Radwood, arrived in the UK for the first time on 11 August as an event specifically for ‘youngtimer’ classics from the Eighties and Nineties. No other formal show in the historic vehicle world has quite such a specific cut-off; it was one of very few gatherings where Classic Car Weekly’s
1991 Mitsubishi Galant was welcomed in. We didn’t dress up, but period togs were encouraged.
Minimally advertised, around 125 cars made the trip to Goodwood.
A Ford Capri 1.6S and a pair of DeLoreans represented the earliest classics on show; while many guests were performance icons seen in
Gran Turismo: think Subaru Impreza WRX, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
VI, Honda NSX and Toyota Celica GT-Four (ST205). The likes of Outrun
were also commemorated, via a Ferrari Testarossa ‘barchetta’ beheaded in the US and reassembled here from a kit of imported parts.
‘Street furniture’ classics long forgotten aside from Hagerty’s Festival of the Unexceptional had a home at Radwood, too; a Fiat Tipo 1600 DGT, Austin Metro Vanden Plas and a Peugeot 605 S1 2.0 contrasted with the pair of TVR Chimaeras and triple bill of Lotus Carltons.
In short, if it hailed from the eras of Gordon Gekko and Tamagotchis respectively, it was in, regardless of its condition.
Radwood UK will return bigger and better next year as CEO and co-founder Art Cervantes explained: ‘ There’ll be more cars in 2020, we had a great response at Goodwood, which is an iconic British location. It’s definitely in the running as a venue for next year.
‘ The UK has a youngtimer car culture which other countries rush to emulate; when we’re established here, we’ll establish Radwood in Germany next.’ Jon Burgess ❚ radwood.com
