TVR CHIMAERA (1993-2003)

-

The promise of a revitalised TVR has got we enthusiasts hot under the collar, but there are plenty of these classic British muscle cars to choose from until that arrives. One of our favourites is the Chimaera, a model that was launched in 1993 and lasted in production for a decade.

Taking its name from a character in Greek mythology and launched at the 1992 British Motor Show, TVR based the new Chimaera on Griffith running gear but with a slightly softer suspension set-up ensuring that it was a little less hardcore. It proved to be one of its biggest sellers, with around 6000 buyers enjoying the Chimaera’s blend of swooping styling and thunderous performance. The latter came courtesy of a Rover V8, linked on early models to the LT77 gearbox, which was replaced in 1994 by the tougher Borg Warner T5 unit. The range started with a 240bhp, 4.0-litre motor progressing through 4.3 and 4.5 iterations before culminating in the fullfat 5.0-litre with 340bhp; it hit 60mph in 4.1 seconds on the way to a 175mph maximum. There’s no doubt the Chimaera has the wallop to make any drive exciting – as does the lack of ABS and traction control – and all versions make a glorious noise.

So when we tell you that one of the highlights of this bank holiday show is the ‘Decibel Duel’ where the judges are out to find the loudest engine, you’ll see how the brutish TVR might do rather well.

Mind you, this popular show isn’t just about fire and fury. In fact, the lovely surroundings of Knebworth Park play host to an event that’s ideal for all members of the family. It’s the classic vehicles we’re interested in, of course, and you’ll find plenty of those from cars to motorcycles, along with a fascinating selection of commercial and military metal – there really is something to appeal to every taste.

The best will be battling for top honours in the Pride of Ownership awards, and it’s all supported by an action arena and parades, concours judging, and ‘ The Herts Motor Show’, which provides a chance to check out the latest modern cars. And when you’re ready for a break the admission price also includes entry to the park grounds, gardens, and dinosaur trail.
