BUYING TIPS

-

■ Test drives are vital. Clackety noises signify camshaft wear, while tired timing chains rattle; both are common and expensive.

■ Watch out for the cumulative cost of new parts. Solid but shabby cars can cost over £20,000 to spruce up.

■ Check it carefully on the inside, and don’t underestimate the cost of getting missing or damaged components replaced. The wood trim is prone to peeling and getting scratched.
