THE WEEK IN DEALS

RICHARD BARNETT’S WEEK OF LOOKING AT THE MARKET

-

WEDNESDAY

If there’s one thing that drives me bonkers about the classic scene it’s this obsession with values – the ‘my car’s more expensive than yours’ stance popular with what a few of us call the ‘red cords brigade’. The letter from Philip Martin (CCW, 26 August) about his Renault 16 was spot-on – he liked his Gallic five-door for reasons that were NOT related to money. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve a soft spot for many Jaguars, but Jaguar Mk2 or Renault 16? I’d take have the latter any day.

FRIDAY

Have you seen the catalogue for the next Classic Car Auctions sale? There’s already a smashing line-up of motors including 1949 and 1950 Morris Minors. There’s also a 1955 Traveller: I’ve a soft spot for the raised headlights/spilt ‘screen design and this woodie has the benefit of a later 948cc engine. Or what about a 1969 or 1970 Triumph Herald 13/60 estates? Or a 1966 Hillman Super Minx estate? However, the one that really catches my eye is the 1976 Triumph 2500S estate. Just about the most handsome ‘long-roof’ to come out of a British car factory, and it’s a late one too.
