WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

The GTS was the 928’s swansong and Porsche saw it off with some style. Engine capacity and power grew and Porsche improved engine smoothness with eight balancing weights rather than six. The baritone war cry of this big-hearted V8 isn’t diminished despite this – neither is its rampant acceleration. This is a heavy car but it doesn’t feel its weight on the move. The old-school auto ‘box and heavy steering might show the car’s age compared to certain younger GT rivals in the corners but they all add to its charm.

BODYWORK CHECK

This example may have covered nearly 94k miles but its condition would suggest a mileage of half that. The Slate Grey paintwork is largely perfect with only some very minor aluminium oxidisation under the paint to be seen on the fuel cap, on the driver’s door and under the windscreen. There are some minor stone chips around the snout but the vendor says that all of these issues will be sorted before the car is sold. The bodywork is beautiful in all other respects. The alloy wheels

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

are in excellent condition and the matching Pirelli P Zero tyres all appear to have plenty of life left in them.

The Marble Grey interior with black leatherette is in good condition throughout. You’ll find only minor creasing and mild bolster wear on the seats – nothing severe. The leather-clad steering wheel is in particularly smart condition, and all is well with the dashboard and switchgear. Given that Porsche threw the entire electronic motherload at this sumptuous interior (seats, sunroof and just about anything else you can imagine), it’s pleasing to be able to report that all the equipment was in

good working order on the day of our test.

UNDER THE BONNET

There’s a thick paperwork file with the car; the service book has largely yearly stamps at specialists and dealers, backed up with invoices, and although certain years are missing from the MoT history the car doesn’t seem to have spent too long between garage visits. It also has a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche GB.

THE CCW VIEW

The GTS sits at the top of the value tree for the Porsche 928. After all, these cars were designed for long-distance travel and engineered with an integrity that few come close to, and this car would have cost its first owner more than £62k in 1994 money. This particular example might not have rather too many miles under it belt to lure a collector, but with its minor body defects addressed, this will be a fully sorted 928 GTS with the right amount/ quality of history and robust mechanicals. Perfect for using rather than polishing, then.
