Tax exempt fun on the road for £5k or less

The average cost of a family package holiday is nearly £5k a year. Why not spend the money on years of tax-exempt fun instead, asks David Simister

- DAVID SIMISTER’S

The will-they-won’t-they worry of not knowing if a cancellation’s just around the corner. The daunting thought of hitting the deckchairs – while donning facemasks. The questions about quarantine. Nope, the idea of jetting off on holiday at the height of a global pandemic doesn’t appeal to me, either. So why not spend the cash on a classic instead?

The average cost of a family holiday is £4792 and when you consider that most Brits then spend at least £200 a week once they’ve unpacked their suitcases at the hotel, you quickly arrive at £5k – easily enough to get you behind the wheel of a tax-exempt classic that’s ready to enjoy at socially distanced shows and on evening outings to the pub and back.

All of the cars shown here can be plucked out of CCW’s classifieds and auctions for less than the cost of a holiday, and rather than giving you a fortnight of fun and a hefty dose of sunburn, they’ll give you years of enjoyment if you look after them.

Well, I certainly know which I’d rather go for…
