other resident camper hasn’t seen much use either – time to get out and about in Wales

I’m ashamed to say that the ‘Benz Camper covered just 928 miles between MoT tests – fewer in 12 months than my Jaguar X-Type mile-muncher can rack up in less than a week.

Having passed its MoT with ease and had all the fluids changed, the 307 isn’t going to be having such a sedentary late summer and autumn. Instead I’ve a fair few day trips lined up because nowhere near enough Tarmac has passed under its wheels of late.

While it was hardly an adventure the day it passed its test, an afternoon pootling around the Brecon Beacons reminded me

September 2017 // 113,083 miles //

OWNED SINCE TOTAL MILEAGE of just why I like it so much. The slow-speed, heavy steering, equally heavy gearbox and often glacial performance constantly remind me of how much it needs grabbing by the scruff of its neck to get it to go anywhere. And yet, and yet… slow down, don’t bury your right foot into the carpet, and all of sudden any 307 journey becomes way more enjoyable. I recently had the brakes bled, so it stops brilliantly, and I don’t know if it’s just me, but it seems to be improving with every outing. Recently it made a 150-mile round trip up to Hay-onWye. It was well worth the journey and the 307 didn’t miss a beat up the (steep) hill, down dale and even on the last few miles of the M4. With new filters, new coolant and those refreshed brakes, I’ve had my confidence restored in this under-used full-sized classic, and there’s still plenty of time for some long-overdue days out.
