WHY MINI BECAME THE STAR OF NEC’S VIRTUAL SHOW
Classic Motor show’s online-only debut includes Cooper sold for charity
The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show’s first ever online-only outing – after the NEC gathering was called off due to the pandemic – raised more than £45,000 for children’s charities last weekend.
The virtual event, hosted by Wheeler Dealers star Mike Brewer, raised funds to support Sporting Bears, whose fundraising passenger rides in classics are normally a focal point of the show. The total included the charity auction of a 1995 Mini Cooper Monte Carlo donated by Silverstone Auctions chairman, Nick Whale.
Estimated at between £10-£12,000 under the hammer, Sporting Bears patron, Mike Brewer, made the first bid at £10,000; the car was eventually sold, with all premiums donated to ‘Bears causes, for £37,125.
Mike Brewer said: ‘It was great fun to be involved with but also very emotional to see the classic car community pulling together to support the incredible work of the Sporting Bears. And as patron of the Bears, there was a tear in my eye when I revealed the final total. A tremendous effort by all involved.’
Silverstone Auctions said it was more than happy to support the show’s fundraising, particularly as the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted Sporting Bears’ normal activities.
Managing director, Nick Whale, said: ‘We are delighted that the 1995 Rover Mini Cooper Monte Carlo raised a fantastic amount of money for them. The money has gone to a great cause.’
The Sporting Bears Motor Club said that it was considering more online events in the future. Midlands Regional Organiser, Alan Moss, commented: ‘We’re delighted with the result and extremely grateful to our patrons, we raised more than we did last year than doing rides at the NEC!’
