WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

The fuel-injected CE idles smoothly just above 500rpm. Slotting into ‘D’, the engine builds its revs in calmly, though this silken Merc can be bullied into kickdowns when required, and the ‘S’ setting allows the driver to explore the top of the rev range. Changes themselves are smooth. Power-assisted steering is light but offers plenty of feel and is free from dead spots. The brakes pull the car up straight and keenly, and there were no untoward noises from the suspension, either while cornering or driving over uneven surfaces. All the gauges work, the temperature sitting at 80 degrees Celsius.

BODYWORK CHECK

The current owner bought the car in 2016 and embarked upon a full restoration. Bumper corners and front wings were replaced, and the inner wings and rear inner arches were repaired, along with the boot floor. The Metallic Silver Blue is consistent throughout, free from scruffs and flat spots, while even the bonnet and chin spoiler are free from chips. The panel fit and finish is excellent all round, and the chrome is exceptional. The underneath is in equally good condition. Tyres are date stamped 2012; although plenty of tread remains, they aren’t from a mainstream brand.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The condition of the inside matches that of the exterior. A secondhand dash and heater controls were fitted as part of the restoration, while the re-lacquered middle facia and gear surround offer a mirror shine. The re-upholstered blue cloth seats are faultless too, and give well-sprung support. The carpets are excellent, as is the headlining, which is taut and free from stains. The steering wheel is undamaged and an aftermarket Blaupunkt head unit is fitted. There’s also a working sunroof and air con, plus electric windows, door mirrors and immobilser.

UNDER THE BONNET

The engine bay is smart and presentable, although the exhaust manifolds are quite pitted. All the fluids are up to the correct levels and appear fresh, while we could find no evidence of leaks. Heat shrink wrap has been applied to the throttle cable that runs across the top of the cylinder head, with additional shielding fitted to the felt lining the inside of the bonnet. Crucially, the engine bay is free from corrosion. Plenty of invoices and history come with the car.

THE CCW VIEW

This handsome coupé has seen a lot of expenditure recently. Its mileage might be a tad high but on a car this well maintained isn’t cause for concern. With top examples selling for well over £20k, this one feels keenly priced. It’s worth noting the number plate is not correct as the owner preferred it not be displayed.

PROS Recent expenditure, well priced, history CONS Old tyres... not much else
