‘Love at first sight’

Your tales of the latest classic car deals. This week, how one reader is rolling back the years with his Consul

What made you want a Ford Consul?

My mate had a Consul MKII during the rock ‘n’ roll revival period of the ‘80s and I loved it. We used to travel to gigs and weekenders in it – so many happy memories involve a Consul. I have wanted one ever since and I received some inheritance money following the passing of my mother, I knew she would want me to enjoy it. She would be pleased that I have bought the car and I’m sure she would love to ride in it.

Tell us about this one.

This is my first classic car but I’m already really enjoying being an owner, and this is the perfect car for me. The car drives really well and it’s a real joy to be behind the wheel. It turns heads everywhere

I go and is appreciated by young and old. It gives me just as much pleasure showing it to anyone who is interested in it as driving it does.

Why did you pick this specific example? Did you see any others?

It was love at first sight. I started looking as soon as I could and saw the car advertised in CCW. It was being sold by Peterborough Classics at Thorney and was the first I had seen. I managed to get the car between lockdowns but I probably would have bought it unseen as the photographs on the advert showed it to be in excellent condition. It was pretty much sold before I had even seen it.

Has it been a joy to own?

I am over the moon with the condition, it’s just as good as it looks in the pictures. The interior has been replaced recently and the bodywork resprayed and it’s mechanically sound. I’ve already joined the Consul, Zephyr, Zodiac MKII Owners’ Club and I’m looking forward to sharing my re-discovered classic car joy with other enthusiasts. There haven’t been any major issues and driving it is an amazing experience.

What are your plans for it now?

I drive the car as often as I can. I’m looking forward to attending some shows next year as well as driving to some rock n’ roll festivals for old time’s sake. As far as jobs on the car go, there really isn’t much to do. I would like to fit a stainless steel exhaust system, not because it needs a new one but just to future-proof it.
