‘I wasn’t looking but couldn’t resist’

Your tales of classic car deals. This week, how one reader’s head was turned by a Fiesta

- TOM MCCOOEY CONTRIBUTOR

What made you want a Ford Fiesta?

I have always been a car enthusiast and this takes me back to my youth, when I bought Ford models. I have a few classic cars and was not looking for any more until I spotted the Fiesta in a magazine it was being offered in an auction, as part of a Ford collection, which were all being sold with no reserve and I couldn’t resist.

Tell us about this one.

Initially I planned to drive it home from the auction at Oulton Park, but I’m glad I got it transported because one of the brakes was locked on. I’ve done some work, such as replacing the battery, tyres and brake cylinder and it is now raring to go with a fresh MOT. Initially I was thinking about having a respray, but a bit of elbow grease has brought it up and I now want to keep it original.

Why did you pick this specific example? Did you see any others?

I didn’t go specifically looking for a MKI Fiesta Popular but once I saw it at the viewing day I knew I had to have it.

There aren’t many of these about any more and I had to take the opportunity of owning one. I was prepared to offer more than I paid for the car but fortunately for me there was only one other party interested, and they quickly dropped out.

Has it been a joy to own?

There are things to get used to for sure, such as having no power steering, and the 80s brakes take some getting used to. But this doesn’t stop it being a fun car to drive, and it keeps up with modern traffic without any trouble at all. The 1.1. Engine is quite lively and so far it has been a great little addition to my fleet.

What are your plans for it now?

I like going to car shows in summer so I intend to exhibit it. It doesn’t need any structural or mechanical work, but I need to stay on top of general maintenance to make sure I can keep it in its original condition. It will get plenty of attention and I’ll make sure that it’s always clean and looked after. making it safe by seeing what a good clean does. The fact that it has no trouble in modern traffic also makes it a very practical way to enjoy a classic. We’re all no doubt familiar with the experience of an ‘I want that’ moment when we’re not actually looking for a car and hopefully a summer of shows will ensure this was a wise move.
