5 WAYS TO MAKE IT BETTER

-

MAKE IT SHARPER 1

Superb handling is a Lotus hallmark, so it’s time for an overhaul if yours isn’t up to scratch. Replacing all of the bushes and getting a specialist to fine-tune the geometry can transform the way an Elan feels, but if you want to go further then fitting an adjustable damper/spring package is worth considering.

FIT BETTER BRAKES 2

The standard brakes are fine unless you’ve gone for a substantial power increase. It’s not expensive to keep them in fine fettle; a set of discs will cost just £100 or so, for example. For a modest improvement you could always uprate the pads with

EBC ‘Greenstuff’ items at less than £100 a set and add braided hoses for around £50-60.

IMPROVE THE ELAN’S 3 PERFORMANCE

The twin-cam units responds well to tuning so you can go as far as your budget allows, with a racier camshaft and cylinder head or an increase in capacity. If you prefer to keep it standard but a re-build is due then get the engine blueprinted and set up on a rolling road.

IMPROVE ITS COOLING 4

No classic benefits from getting hot and bothered and the Elan is no exception. If the cooling system is basically sound then consider enhancing things with an upgraded alloy radiator and an electric fan. Lotus specialist, Paul Matty, sells a kit for around £400 that you can easily fit yourself.

REPLACE THE 5 DRIVESHAFT COUPLINGS

The driveshaft ‘doughnut’ couplings are an Achilles’ Heel, so go for aftermarket driveshafts with CV joints. These will set you back by around £500-600 per pair, but it’s well worth it in the longer term because this is basically a fit and forget solution that may well outlast the car.
