Arrive in a classic, go up in a Spitfire!

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE SYWELL AERODROME, SYWELL, NORTHAMPTON NN6 0BT. 30 APRIL/1 MAY

If you attend a brand new classic car event this summer, there’s the chance of a ‘ride’ in a Spitfire… and we don’t mean of the Triumph variety.

Spitfire Scramble is a new classic car rally being put on by Bespoke Rallies using Sywell Aerodrome near Northampton as its base. Its culmination will see a draw for one lucky attendant to scoop a flight in a World War Two Spitfire two-seater fighter plane.

Just 30 cars are being signed up for the Spitfire Scramble. The two-day gathering consists of tests at the airfield – well-known for its Art Deco buildings, military museum and being a popular venue for classic car meetings – plus an average of ten regularity trials, which will form part of a 90-mile scenic road route each day. The overnight stay will be at Sywell’s Aviator Hotel and include an evening meal (with late bar) and breakfast. Entry is open to vintage (1920 to 1949), classic (1950 to 1979) and modern classic (1980 to 1999) cars. Because of the trials aspect, vehicles will require a Halda/trip Master or similar.

While Bespoke Rallies is generally better-known for its overseas events director John Bridgen said: ‘Much as our clients enjoy our overseas adventures, there’s a lot to be said for the relative ease of contesting a home-grown event in the current climate, for which Sywell is the perfect base. And, as motor sport lovers are often equally passionate about flying, we expect the 1-in-60 (great odds!) chance for participants to win a flight in arguably the most iconic of all aeroplanes to be a considerable added lure.’

Tickets are £685 for two participants sharing a room.
