Tempted by this Seventies pocket rocket? Here’s what to look for

-

LEARN WHERE IT’LL ROT

Door bottoms, valances, inner/outer sills and wheel arches all disintegrate with abandon. The leading edge of the bonnet and bottom of the boot lid can get frilly, as can front wings, and watch for corrosion around the scuttle and screen surrounds, which can spread into the A-pillars. Lastly, check all panel seams thoroughly and the door hinge area from within the front wheel-arch.

HOW’S THE A-SERIES?

Don’t expect it to be oil-tight – leaks from the rocker cover and sump are easily cured – but listen for the rattle of worn valve-gear and timing chain that point to a more involved overhaul. The same applies if you spot excessive oil smoke caused by worn valve stem oil seals or guides. The cooling system can be a weak spot, too, with a corroded or silted radiator or leaking water pump the common bothers; the cylinder head gasket will go if the usual early warning signs are ignored.

DOES IT JUMP OUT OF GEAR?

Expect the normal chatter from the four-speed gearbox, but this shouldn’t be excessive, while age and mileage ultimately lead to worn synchromesh, whining bearings, and jumping out of gear. The transmission shares its lubricant with the engine so oil/filter changes should be done every 3000 miles.

SEE HOW IT STEERS

Steering should feel sharp and accurate so any slop points to wear in the rack or joints. If the wheel moves up and down it’ll be worn column bushes. Is the original three-spoke steering wheel still fitted? Many got swapped for something smaller and sportier, so a good used one can fetch up to £400.

TRY AND GET IT ON A RAMP

the footwells and floorpan need careful scrutiny, while sill rot can spread alarmingly, and restoration then becomes much more involved. Pay attention to the boot, too, checking the floor, the inner rear wings and the mountings for the fuel tank as well as the condition of the tank itself. Don’t forget the battery tray, which corrodes away, and lift the rear seat base if you can to ensure that the area beneath is sound. If the body is too far gone there’s always the option of a replacement heritage shell, but it’ll set you back more than £9000.
