Why MG fans need to ‘B at the Revival

WEST SUSSEX GOODWOOD REVIVAL, GOODWOOD MOTOR CIRCUIT, CLAYPIT LANE, GOODWOOD, CHICHESTER PO18 0PH. 15-18 SEPTEMBER

-

Goodwood has announced its full race line-up for this year’s Revival in September, with 13 different contests split over 15 races during the three-day meeting. And as ever with the Revival, it will be a varied and exciting cocktail of everything from pre-ww2 GP cars to Sixties saloons and sports prototypes.

One of the stand-out tussles will be the Lavant Cup, with its regularly changing format. For 2022, it will feature an all-mgb line, inspired by a similar battle at the 78th Members’ Meeting last year as well as it being 60 years since the definitive British mainstream sports car was launched. Around 30 ‘Bs are expected on the grid, and with all the drivers in the same model, the racing is bound to be very close.

The St Mary’s Trophy, another popular highlight, will also return with its mix of 1960-1966 production-based saloons – in other words, vehicles that most people can recognise and relate to. The two-race battle between the smaller, better-handling machines like Minis and Cortinas and the larger, more powerful but less nimble Jaguars and Ford Galaxies is always a crowd-pleaser, as is the participation of VIP drivers from the BTCC, GT racing and F1.

Elsewhere the first race of the weekend – the Freddie March Memorial Trophy – will champion sports cars from the late Forties and early Fifties such as the Jaguar C-type, Aston Martin DB3S and Allard J2X. Friday’s race will continue into the sunset for the first time since 2015. The Goodwood Trophy will be for Grand Prix and Voiturette cars from either side of WW2, while more modern Grand Prix machines will contest the Glover Trophy for 1.5-litre F1 cars from 1961 to 1965.
