JUBILEE JOY

Patriotically themed two-day outing yields strong results at Leominster

-

This bustling two-day sale tapped into the Platinum Jubilee mood by dedicating its second half entirely to British classics, while the opening day was a typically vibrant sale o ering covering most tastes and budgets.

The first day featured one of the most intriguing lots o ered in any sale this year – a long-term barn-stored 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE that was largely complete, including the engine block. If that wasn’t enough to fire-up any 1960s Ferrari enthusiast it was also joined by a 1963 250 GTE rolling chassis. The car made £109,536, the chassis £66,366.

Other cars o ered in the first day’s sale included a tidy 1959 Alvis TD21 in need of recommissioning for £9632, a 1958 MG Magnette from 20 years ownership for £5908 and a 1948 Ford Prefect for £6440.

As expected it was the modern classic area where some power/cost bargains could be found. A 2000 Mercedes-benz CL500 was bought for £2268 and a 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 in need of improvement £8322.

The second day of the two-day extravaganza saw a line-up of British makes, ranging from a 1904 Rover 8hp to a 1995 Bentley Continental R, finding new homes. The Rover, a participant in numerous London to Brighton Veteran Car Runs, made just over £106,000.

Morgans were well represented, the earliest model, a 1929 Super Aero o for £33,600 and the youngest, a 2003 Plus 8 bought for £38,641. The sale lined up a healthy selection of pre-war cars, lots including a 1924 Wolseley A9 drophead, the larger 2.6-litre tourer away for £11,200 and a 1929 Lea-Francis P-type tourer for £14,392.

Moving slightly on a 1951 MG TD in rare competition C guise sold for £22,400 and a 1954 TF1250, £20,282. Jaguar XKS were o ered and were unsurprisingly dearer than the MGS with a 1954 XK120 Roadster bought for £135,520 while a 1958 XK150SE 3.8 hardtop automatic made £57,792 and a 1957 XK150 SE 3.8 drophead £72,800.

Two replicas also performed well – a 1996-built Proteus C-type went away at £86,016 while the day before a Teal Type 59 replica easily broke its £25,000-30,000 estimate at a whopping £45,662.
