Time warp Escort divides opinion
Tiny-mile Ford sells – but what should the new owner do with it?
A 1972 Ford Escort 1300XL with just 124 miles on the clock sold over the weekend for £21,750. Finished in period Tawny Brown metallic paint with 12-inch wheels the car is in time warp condition, with a black vinyl interior and wood-eect inlays, and comes with the original owner’s manual, dealer brochure, logbook, service book, pre-delivery inspection paperwork, factory build sheet, spare wheel, jack and toolkit.
The car was bought and then immediately shut away in a heated garage, hence its excellent condition. That said, the driver’s door was resprayed after sustaining minor damage while in storage and there is a blemish on the bonnet and a scratch on the nearside front wing.
Ed Callow at auctioneer Collecting Cars said: ‘Nostalgia is a signicant factor in many classic car purchases, so a true time warp example of a family favourite like the Ford Escort MKI was always going to do very well. With just 124 miles on the odometer, this car had been exceptionally well preserved. Auctions are a great way to sell such special cars, and competitive bidding delivered a great result for the seller.’
CCW’S auctions expert, Richard Barnett, said: ‘Recently Manor Park sold a 1970 Escort 1300 Super, again a fourdoor model, with 23,000 miles on the clock and seriously good service history for £17,000. At £21,750 the Collecting
Cars Escort did well enough but with money getting tighter surely people will want to use their classics more, rather than have them sitting unused? With 124 miles on the clock, what do you do it?’
