Don’t put people off Stags!

-

Ican’t believe that you are still writing about the old issues that plagued the Triumph Stag, resulting in a lot of heartache for people who had wanted a 2+2 soft-top car with such desirable looks (CCW, 21 February).

Over the years a number of issues have been highlighted in particular with regards to overheating, which I hear about most times when I go to classic car shows with my Stag. I get asked if it overheats, what's the fuel economy like, have you done this to it, have you done that to it, etc. etc. Yawn!

We are now in the 21st century and all of the issues highlighted in years gone by have now been fully addressed with modern oils and bigger Kenlowe fans (for example) along with any electrical issues being sorted, too. There are many expert Stag service and refurbishment businesses that provide an excellent support network.

I’ve had my Triumph Stag for ten years, now, and apart from one brake caliper, a stuck ignition barrel and new battery being fitted this week (the existing one was 12 years old) its original three-litre Triumph V8 has performed magnificently within this period of time – including a 984-mile journey to France and back in 34 degree heat.

However, while writing about a car’s past failings it would be good to report about how improvements have been made to these cars today enabling them to be reliable and enjoyable. Around 10,000 people are enjoying these cars in the UK today.

Readers shouldn't be put off investing in a Triumph Stag – or any other classic car for that matter. Mark Brooks, chairman,

We appreciate that enthusiasts will want to know the potential pitfalls on examples that haven’t been as wellmaintained as yours but do agree that modern engineering and maintenance know-how have worked out the V8’s kinks, which we said in the piece – Ed.
