The Dealmaker By Tom Hartley, £19.99, veloce.co.uk An unusual, unexpected autobiography by one of Britain’s longest-serving and most successful supercar dealers. Born into a carpet-selling Romany traveller family, a millionaire by 17, living in a caravan again by 19 and now friend and confidant of the rich and famous. A truly fascinating insight into the mind of one of the car world’s great characters. Worth it for his unusual insights into John Egan’s Jaguar tenure alone.
How To Build A Patina Volkswagen By Mark Walker, £30, veloce.co.uk Author, Volkswagen specialist restorer and serial modifier Mark Walker is an expert at creating the patinated look so beloved by some classic VW fans, so if you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right. There’s also a vital lesson in this book that the classic mainstream could learn from, about how to properly preserve the genuine originality of a barn-find car while making it usable. More important to restorers than they might expect from the title.
The Essential Buyer’s Guide: Mercedes-benz G-wagen By Nik Greene, £13.99, veloce.co.uk This slim softback is aimed primarily at prospective buyers as something to take with them when checking out cars. But author Greene offers a lot more by way of the history and development story of Germany’s answer to the first Range Rover, including original design sketches. It’s still effectively a buying guide, but there’s plenty more for fans than first meets the eye here.
