Owning Denis Jenkinson’s Grand Prix-express Jaguar E-type
In the article ‘Cool Cat Hot Property’ (January 2021), Denis ‘Jenks’ Jenkinson’s first E-type was not a 2+2, but a two-seater fixed-head coupé that he ran from 12 March 1965 until April 1970. It was supplied by the Tourist Trophy Garage in Farnham in left-hand drive but with British registration FPL 660C.
Jenks attended over 100 grand prix and sports car races around Europe in this E-type, as well as visiting most of the motor manufacturers and racing teams during his five years and 110,000 miles of ownership. In 1970 he replaced it with a Series 2 white drophead which he never enjoyed as much.
Since I bought it in 2006, I have taken it to Salon Privé, Le Mans, Spa, Silverstone, Kop Hill and Goodwood. It was shown to Sir Stirling Moss, and driven up Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb with great gusto by Norman Dewis – at the age of 94! A unique and historically important E-type still being enjoyed today in its 56th year.
