I’ve relapsed...

I’ve owned several classics in the past. After a few years off I’ve got the itch back but I’m not sure what to buy – my problem is I don’t have storage, so the car will be on the drive. I’m looking at Mercedes R129s, R230s, and BMW E36/E46 convertibles. Do you think these are OK with a ‘winter coat’? Steve Land

Even a high-quality car cover won’t give total protection over winter but as long as you keep moving and starting your classic to prevent condensation and moisture build up it should help. Given that rust will be your main potential enemy I’d go for a Mercedes R230 Sport.

Prices are really good value right now and you can buy a lovely mid-2000s 500SL with 60k-70k miles for sub £10k. Just make sure it comes with a good M-B dealer history, you have the electric roof checked over and that all the drain holes are clear before you buy. Quentin Willson

Swedish dilemma

Hi Quentin. I’m trying to choose between a Saab 900 T16 auto and Volvo 850 T5R estate – which would you recommend? Terry Barton

I’d go for the T16 because it hasn’t had the price hype of the Volvo, is comparatively rare and deceptively quick. Summer is coming - a T16 ragtop will be a perfect sunshine cruiser; £10k will buy you a great example. Make sure it’s low mileage, with history and mint. Quentin Willson

Sell now or hold fire?

I have an Imola Red Z3 M coupé, factory spec with 45k on the clock. I’ve fallen out of love with it, should I sell now? I’m hoping to release enough for a nice 964 - what model should I get if this is a realistic ambition? Thanks Alex Williams

I’d put the Z3 up for sale now. In such an uncertain market and with fuel prices rising I’d take advantage of the decent weather and start marketing it right away. With that lovely mileage and the right colour you might get £35k to £40k. A similar mileage 964 feels like around £65k right now and worth buying – it’s undervalued compared to other 911s. I’d go for a mint Carrera 2 Coupé but strictly no massive milers with sketchy history though.
