Reclaiming the reg!

-

If your machine came with a current V5 there is no problem, a simple change of ownership will suffice. If it didn’t it’s not difficult to reclaim the original number providing you have one of the following: the original old style log book (RF60/VE60), archive or library records showing the registration number and the frame number which needs to be authorised by the archivist and clearly defines where the material was taken from. The final option is rather vague, merely stating, “other pre 1983 documentary evidence linking the frame and the registration number to the vehicle”. We assume that dealer record books might suffice in this instance. You will need a recent photograph and to fill in forms V55/5 and V765. Note though, you will have to go through one of the owners’ clubs authorised by the DVLA who should inspect the machine to check that it is indeed the age that you say it is. If you can’t provide proof (this Honda was a case in point as I had a registration plate but no evidence to link it with the machine) you will still have to go through one of the owners’ clubs to prove the age of the machine and will be issued with an age related number instead. Just a thought: if you do eventually come across evidence to link the original number to the machine in the future you can reapply to have the ‘proper’ number reinstated. While the say-so of the authorised owners’ club is usually accepted, the DVLA reserves the right to also inspect the machine to ensure all is in order.
