SEALEY HEX KEY SET

- Bertie Simmonds www.sealey.co.uk

Now, it’s fair to say I’ve been a bit of a cheapskate when it comes to tools. I’ve blagged and borrowed where I could and only bought stuff I really needed.

About 10 years back I lent a mate my old hex key set: and it was never returned (he reads this, so he knows who he is!) But, I took this as some form of punishment for (ahem) doing the same to an old mate, who later emigrated… The shipping costs were too high to return the stuff. So, for some years I soldiered on with allen keys of assorted types that I’d had rattling around in the tool box. Then I bit the bullet and bought the Sealey/premier AK7143 Hex Key Set.

Why didn’t I do this sooner? I should listen to Ralph Ferrand when he says good tools do the job quicker and easier. Suddenly all the jobs I’d left to my old, rusty allen keys weren’t a chore but a pleasure once more.

The set is an eight-piece set up, in metric, sizes being: 2 x75, 2.5 x 75, 3 x 75, 4 x 80, 5 x 100, 6 x 100, 8 x 150 and 10 x 150mm. The shafts themselves are made from hardened and tempered chrome vanadium steel, while the T-handles are comprised of tough plastic along with a rubberised grip. With the choice of using both long and short options, you can get into most nooks and crannies, and you’ve even got ‘hanging holes’ in the T-bar so you can mount them on the wall. Me? I love the very handy stand you get with them: the allen keys can rust away, no one is borrowing these beauties off me!

Price is around £54 ‘officially’ but I’ve seen plenty of sites offering these wonderful sturdy instruments for as low as £25 on special offer… so do shop around!
