HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN

What is it with this fascination among Classic Pop favourites for belting out anthems while taking a stroll on the edge of a windswept cliff? It highlights a flagrant disregard for their own safety and the coastguard’s stretched resources. Perhaps Eurythmics kickstarted the trend, later aped a zillion times from Tears For Fears’ Shout to The Cure’s Just Like Heaven. The duo’s atmospheric archetype was filmed on Orkney, featuring the towering sea stack of the Old Man of Hoy. Elsewhere, the video adopts a slightly sinister voyeuristic concept, with Dave’s character stalking Annie with a film camera.

WHO’S THAT GIRL?

Set in a cabaret style bar, Annie is reimagined as a sultry blonde singer, dolled up in a shoulder-length 60s wig. Dave meanwhile is the womaniser, surrounded by a string of admirers. Once again they toy with gender play, as Annie appears in a second role: a suited man, vaguely resembling Elvis, complete with five o’clock shadow. The magical twist occurs when both Annie’s characters join together for a kiss (or the best approximation with the available FX of the time). To cap off the spectacle, a fun game can be enjoyed spotting all

RIGHT BY YOUR SIDE

This standard performance video shouts: “Look, we’re not a duo, we’re a band!” complete with all the decade’s classic stylings (a Russell electronic drum kit and a LinnDrum, obviously). In a curious sartorial choice for the socially conscious vegetarian, Lennox seems to have stolen her outfit from Cruella de Vil: a trouser suit with leopard print hat, gloves, earrings, complete with a full leopard skin sash. Let’s hope it’s faux. That aside, it’s an uplifting promo, as befitting the track itself. Even the usually cool and stonyfaced Dave Stewart (wearing what could almost be described as a cape) can’t help but boogie with a huge grin on his face. the pop cameos as Stewart’s love interests. Top marks if you can find Classic Pop stalwarts Bananarama, Bucks Fizz, Marilyn, and Kiki Dee.
