DREAMLAND

Directed by RMV Productions, the promo for the duo’s Olly Alexander collaboration Dreamland was a simple lyric video beginning with a backdrop of a greentiled wall before a sideways-scrolling Berlin subway scene is revealed as the lyrics flash across the screen depicted as graffiti, written on posters, on the side of trains, ticket machines, inside lifts and on escalators. Simple but effective.

BURNING THE HEATHER

With acoustic guitar provided by Bernard Butler, Hotspot’s second single arrived with an unfussy lyric video that utilised a simple backdrop of clouds, classic rural vistas, shapes, sheep, country village scenes and, well, burning heather – it’s a collage that essentially follows the lyrics. “We don’t really regard it as a proper single,” Neil admitted to Classic Pop. “It’s not in the Pet Shop Boys’ singles canon.”

MONKEY BUSINESS

Neil and Chris make their first proper appearance in a video since 2013 in this promo, filmed at the Prism nightclub in Watford. To add to that, Chris actually dances in this fun Vaughan Arnell-directed affair. Said Lowe in the EPK: “I always have these ideas and I regret it immediately but I thought it would be fun going to one of those dance studios and getting the leggings out and becoming a dancer for a short time.”

I DON’T WANNA

A straightforward, but enjoyable Mangaesque, comic book-styled animated lyric video (Neil’s first position post-college was as London Editor of Marvel Comics), again created by animation studio RMV Productions, accompanied PSB’s fourth and final Hotspot single. As the lonely boy rejects the many invitations to go out over text, he eventually caves in and leaves home to party with friends.
