Classic Racer

CADWELL RECALLED

-

Dear Malc, With Derek Chatterton being one of the main past masters in action at the Cadwell Park 80th anniversary celebration I thought you might be interested in the enclosed photograph. I took this shot on one of my first visits to Cadwell on Sunday, September 13, 1959. It shows the start line of the Senior 500cc Championship Trophy race run over 20 laps. The rider nearest, No 3, is Peter Chatterton with his new G50 Matchless. On the grid Peter lined up along with Alastair King, Mike Hailwood, Peter Middleton, Dan Storey, Bob Anderson, Peter Davey and Norman Storer to name a few. I know that Peter Chatterton finished third in his six lap heat behind the Nortons of Bob Anderson and Peter Davey but I don’t know his finish position in the final. Alastair King won both his heat and the final. As you will know Peter Chatterton was the older brother of ‘Mr Cadwell’ Derek Chatterton. I believe that Peter Chatterton later tragically lost his life in a road accident while riding a motorcycle. He was a top competitor on short circuits and also raced in the IOMTT and Ulster GP races in the early Sixties. He raced a variety of machines, NSU Sportmax, Gold Star, Manx Norton and Ajs/matchless singles. I really enjoyed reading issue 171, TT Boycott and Jack Ahearn articles are brilliant and I’m glad you gave our old mate Cleve Brightman a mention in the Laverda article. The Jarno Saarinen-nurburgring 1972 is really good with super pictures, the one of Saarinen and Agostini giving each other the look, before the start, is a classic. Terry Birch Nottingham
