Call for calm

Classic Racer - - ARCHIVE -

Dear CR Nice mag – always interesting and as a recent newcomer to classic racing – I get to learn a lot about the history of racing too. On the subject of the current replica/ re-creation/look-a-like debate – can I please call for a little calm? I fully understand that those who are interested in the ‘real thing’ will always find anything else to be inferior. The fact is that these original bikes are very costly to acquire and keep running, and so without replicas/re-creations/ call-them-what-you-like, original racing bikes risk becoming museum pieces. I’d also like to remind the purists that racing motorcycles have always undergone changes, updates and improvements – so it seems to be a bit of a moot point about what actually constitutes an original bike in any case. I think that provided those who build new versions of originals do so in the right spirit – i.e. not try to pass them off as originals (which I believe is called ‘fraud’), but instead are content to have a very nice machine that they race and so give pleasure to lots of spectators – then I really don’t see the harm. It’s what provides a ready supply of newcomers to the sport, which surely is a good thing. I’m a long-time motorcyclist but quite new to classic racing. As a newcomer there’s no chance of me being able to justify the cost of buying an original race bike. Instead, I race a converted road bike ‘in the style of’ a works Suzuki TR500 – not a copy, but inspired by. At race meetings there’s never any question of it being a copy, and yet still there are lots of folk stopping for a good nose at and chat about the bike. Plus it’s another bike on the grid keeping racing alive and healthy. Isn’t that what we all should be encouraging? Regards to all Antony Perrett

Thanks for writing, Antony. Welcome to CR. I’m sure your letter will get a bit of response and I echo your sentiment for calm. Enjoy what you ride. Tony
