Classic Racer

Unfortunately rain and oil spills along with five red flags stopped play at this year’s Tandragee 100 Road Races.

Eventually three races took place over the 5.3 mile course in County Armagh, in a year celebrating the event’s 60th anniversary.

The only Classic Races held were the Junior Classics which included 250/350 and 125cc GP Machines.

Brian Mateer won the 250cc race beating runner-up Phil Shaw by over a minute. In the concurrently run 350cc race, Barry Davidson made an audacious move on the outside of

Nigel Moore on the last corner of the last lap to take his 94th Irish road race victory.

Meanwhile, Andy Hornby secured 3rd by a similar move on the last corner of the last lap to pip Mark Johnson. German Rider Chris Meyer thrilled the crowd with his sweet-sounding 125cc Morbidelli machine in the Classic GP Class.

Sadly we were denied witnessing what promised to be an epic battle between Andy Hornby and Guy Martin in the Senior Classic Class. Newcomer Hornby secured an impressive pole position by 1.6 secs as Martin got to grips with the Les and Denise Whiston Trident MCS BSA R3 brought over to replace Guy’s own after it suffered terminal problems the previous week at Cookstown.

Sadly, the glorious weather on the Friday changed on Saturday to continual rain and the tough but correct decision was taken to abandon the meeting after three races.
