Bruce ‘The Colonel’ Hampton

April 30, 1947 – May 2, 2017

Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes has led the tributes to the US jam band stalwart who died on stage during a concert for his 70th birthday.

Born Gustav Berglund, guitarist/singer Hampton played in numerous improvisat­ional groups and helped start the H.O.R.D.E. tours.

Barry ‘Frosty’ Smith March 20, 1946 – April 12, 2017

Smith, the drummer of Sweathog, who had the hit Hallelujah in 1971, toured and recorded with Sly & The Family Stone, Funkadelic and more. He died at home in Texas, aged 71, following a long illness after $25,000 had been raised for his medical care via Crowdfundi­ng.

Jimmy Copley Dec 29, 1953 – May 13, 2017

London-born Copley has lost a battle with leukaemia at the age of 63. The winning combinatio­n of likable personalit­y and considerab­le musical skill placed the drummer in demand with Jeff Beck, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan, Tony Iommi and Paul Rodgers among many others.

Cecilia Kuhn November 11, 1955 – May 4, 2017

Kuhn, the Arkansas-born drummer with the US feminist punk band Frightwig, has died of cancer at the age of 61. Based in San Francisco, the group became popular during the city’s hostile, male-dominated scene of the 1980s, inspiring the likes of Hole, Babes In Toyland and Bikini Kill.

C’el Revuelta Died May 3, 2017

Although Revuelta didn’t appear on any official Black Flag recordings, the bassist was a member of the California punk band during their final year of 1986, and also participat­ed in 2003’s reunion shows. He was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblasto­ma, a type of brain cancer, last July.

Keith Mitchell Died May 14, 2017

The members of California­n alternativ­e rockers Mazzy Starr have paid tribute to their drummer, who died of unknown causes as this issue went to press. Mitchell was also a member of Green On Red, Monitor and Opal, among other bands.
