Tom’s Treasure
New 60-song collection raids late Petty’s vaults.
A treat is in store for fans of the late, great Tom Petty. An exhaustive new retrospective collection, out on September 28 via Reprise Records, digs deep into the archives of the singer, songwriter and musician who died of an accidental drug overdose last October.
Previewed by a single, a previously unreleased 1982 track called Keep A Little Soul, An American Treasure comprises 60 tracks, including many previously unreleased or rare recordings. It also includes songs from his solo career, with the Heartbreakers and the Mudcrutch project.
It was compiled by Petty’s widow
Adria and daughter Dana along with the Heartbreakers keyboard player Benmont Tench, guitarist Mike Campbell and longtime collaborator Ryan Ulyate.
“Everyone involved in this project chose each track with tremendous care and deep respect for the body of work
Tom Petty created over the course of 40 years,” reads a statement.
“He also accumulated a wealth of unreleased music in his vaults, and we have collectively uncovered one gem after another that will keep us all listening and discovering new facets of Tom’s talent for many years to come. We can’t wait to share with Tom’s fans this musical portrait of an artist who deeply affected our culture and indelibly touched the lives of fans the world over.”
An American Treasure will be available in various formats. A deluxe four-CD edition includes all 60 tracks plus a 52-page booklet with rare and previously unseen photographs, while a super-deluxe version adds extras including reproductions of Petty’s own handwritten lyrics to four of its songs. A six-LP vinyl edition released on November 23 includes all 60 tracks. A two-CD standard edition comprises 26 career-spanning tracks cherry-picked from the deluxe packages. DL
